Ingredients

  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 1 lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 2 roma tomatoes, diced
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 pinch ground cayenne pepper (optional)

Method

Prepare the Avocados
  1. Cut the avocados in half lengthwise and remove the pits. Scoop the flesh into a medium mixing bowl. Choose avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure—they should feel like a ripe peach. Too firm and they'll taste bland; too soft and they may have brown spots inside.
Mash to Your Preferred Texture
  1. Use a fork to mash the avocados to your preferred consistency. Mash until mostly smooth with a few small chunks remaining for character and texture, or mash completely smooth if desired.
Add the Citrus and Seasoning
  1. Squeeze the lime juice directly over the mashed avocado and sprinkle in the salt. Stir gently to distribute evenly. The lime brightens the flavor and prevents browning.
Mix in the Fresh Ingredients
  1. Fold in the diced onion, chopped cilantro, tomatoes, and minced garlic. Use a gentle hand to incorporate everything without turning the guacamole into mush.
Adjust Seasoning and Serve
  1. Taste the guacamole and adjust as needed. Add more salt if it tastes flat, extra lime for more zing, or a pinch of cayenne for heat. Let it sit for five minutes to allow flavors to meld, then serve immediately with your favorite chips or vegetables.

Notes

Substitutions: Use 2 tablespoons of finely chopped green onions instead of regular onion for a milder flavor. Dried cilantro (1 teaspoon) can replace fresh. Swap cayenne for cumin for earthier warmth. Time-saving tip: Use pre-diced frozen onions and pre-minced refrigerated garlic. Common mistakes to avoid: Do not use unripe avocados, never skip the lime juice, avoid over-mixing, and always mash avocados before adding other ingredients. Storage: Store in an airtight container with plastic wrap pressed directly against the surface. Keeps in the refrigerator for 1-2 days. Freezing is not recommended. To revive leftovers, stir and add a squeeze of fresh lime. Can be made up to 4 hours ahead of serving.
